Static Radio
One For the Good Guys

Review by Cherise Coryell

For the last 4 years, I have not paid much attention to the music scene. Locally, it did not seem like much was happening. While recently going through my CDs, I found an old Static Radio album that made me think otherwise. I listened to it, and it all came back to me. I remember seeing Static Radio at a small venue - probably a Knights of Columbus or a VFW of some sort. It was a locals show. Nothing too big, just some local bands playing a rockin' show. After the show, I immediately found Static Radio's Myspace page and have been keeping up on what they have been doing since then. I am also looking into seeing them live again, especially after finding out they were recording a new record.

Now, here I am, listening to Static Radio's new record, "One For the Good Guys." They still have that Static Radio sound that they always had, and they can still bang out an intense song to start a pit to. I wish I could say I liked the old stuff or the new stuff better, but truth be told, it's all Static Radio, and it's all good no matter how new or old it is. The title track is possibly their strongest song on the album. It's one that, if they started the show off with it, you could see the middle just open up with kids dancing and pounding their fists into the air. It is the song kids go home and tell their friends about.

Listening to this album, you can't help but want to know all the words to "All The Same" and scream along as they scream them. You will also want to be right in the middle of the pit for "Who's Laughing Now," so you can put forth as much energy as Static Radio do in their songs. Maybe you will want to scream, "Encore!" for them to play "Can't Keep Us Down." It's always good to listen to a band you haven't heard in a while. It's even better to know that they didn't lose their great sound or their rock and roll energy. There are not enough good bands out there holding onto the sound that made them great. Static Radio is definitely holding it down for themselves in that sense.

Static Radio makes music for NJ punks to be proud of. This is a band you couldn't pass up seeing if they happened to play in your town. I mean, with a sound like this, would you even want to? Four years later and they're a band that I can still appreciate in the same way. The scene is still good around here and bands like Static Radio prove it.
