City of Angels Soundtrack
Review by Tom Horan
Issue 2, Summer/Fall 2003
Released way back in the promising year of 1998, this CD was an instant hit. If you listened to mainstream radio five years ago, you would be a liar if you said that you never sang along to "Iris" or "Uninvited" when it came on the radio. This CD, though not as good as the movie, gets 3 out of 4 stars. The first half or three quarters of the CD is excellent listening material and is the kind of music that you want to listen to anywhere. But it's toward the end of the CD that you will still listen to it, but you want it to end in a way. The two best songs on the CD are, yes, the two ones that went mainstream. The Goo Goo Dolls' song "Iris" is a great song. Though it did get overplayed, the song's popularity has died down and now you can listen to it for what it truly is. Then, there is the harder sounding "Uninvited" by Miss Alanis Morissette. The song itself packs plenty of hard guitar riffs, eerie piano keys, and chilling vocals that give you goose bumps, which makes the song very easy to be played over and over again. It also has its classic rock tracks such as Jimi Hendrix's "Red House." The album is like a time-warp though; it's like you've gone back to the late 90's and it's just great. If you're in the mood for some lighter listening or just something that sounds good to just play at the beach or at a party, then this is definitely a great choice.
