Projekt Revolution Tour 2007:
Mindless Self Indulgence
Review by Jen Morey
As Projekt Revolution progresses on, the supporting bands wind down. Styles of Beyond, Madina Lake, The Bled, and Saosin kick it off, getting the crowd psyched, leaving Mindless Self Indulgence as the last musical calamity to grace the stage before Julien-K takes over, the first of the main stage's lineup. Vocalist Little Jimmy Urine, Guitarist Steve, Righ?, Bassist LynZ, and Drummer Kitty assume their positions onstage, and without further ado, mercilessly harass their crowd of mainly fishnet-donning, eyeliner wearing fans clad in black. Occasionally, a guy in a Blue's Clues costume is spotted or a kick in the face is received from some guy in a banana suit crowd surfing.
The band puts on an amazing show. Their intensity onstage drives the crowd into a near-rioting frenzy, and ensures that everyone, including themselves, are thoroughly entertained. Jimmy and Steve jump around the stage, mock the fans, and abuse each other. Jimmy prances on a Dance Dance Revolution mat, gleefully announcing that he practices at home and will kick anyone's ass. During "Faggot," if the crowd's singing impresses Jimmy, he takes off his pants, and continues to run around... pant-less.
In the past, Jimmy's antics onstage have led to him being arrested. Steve's broken a hip during a show, and LynZ had a collapsed lung, obviously needing to be rushed to the hospital. LynZ joins Jimmy and Steve in their attempt to create as much havoc as possible, jumping around, bending over completely backwards, and jumping into the crowd, while risking molestation from a cult of 12-year-old Good Charlotte wannabes. Quite an ingenious way to connect with the fans. Not many musicians would have the balls to do such a thing, for fear of being dropped... or worse. Kitty is left to concentrate on abusing her drum set. MSI is definitely a band well worth knowing, and even better to see live, since they put on the best show of the day.
