TV/TV
Interview with guitarist Doc Holliday
By Jenna MurphyS&S: I heard that inspiration for your band name came from a group
learned about in (lead singer) Josh's film class. Do you guys consider your
music to be very "in your face" like the TVTV group?
Doc: Yeah, yeah definitely. A lot of that sort of energy, that sort
of idea of like pushing and getting in someone's face. Our music, especially
our new record, is very much in your face. You know, if we have an idea
in a song, the idea hits you immediately. It's there. It's like, here it
is, I get it. You know? And I think that musically it reflects that kind
of thing. And also our whole attitude. The way we are with fans, we like
to be upfront, we like to be involved, we like to be very hands-on. So yeah,
I think that's an extension of that whole attitude.
S&S: You guys are impossible to Google! However, one of the things
I did come across when I Googled your named was that you're an unsigned
band headlining Warped Tour. How does it feel to get your big break here?
Doc: It's incredible! We're thankful every single day. It's definitely
very cool, and it is quite definitely the greatest opportunity that this
band has ever gotten. We can't be more thankful to Kevin Lyman.
S&S: Because you guys are unsigned, do you feel this will lead to
record labels showing interest?
Doc: I think that there's been interest already and it's very important
to us that we stay focused on what our overall plan is. I think that once
we find a label or people that share that big picture, you know, we'll find
ourselves there. You know, maybe it'll happen this month, maybe it'll happen
in a year.
S&S: Absolutely. So you guys already have two EP's out. Can fans
expect a full-length album anytime soon?
Doc: Well, we want to continue to release music as much as we can.
Right now, we just released the new EP, so a full-length album will come.
Maybe not within this year, but it's definitely something that we obviously
need to do, and want to do. We're just going to keep on working on releasing
more music and keep on doin' it, you know.
S&S: Right, very cool. You guys have previously toured with some
great bands (The Bravery, Anarbor, Artist vs. Poet). Are there any bands
that you would love to tour with anytime soon?
Doc: Uhmmm. There's bands on Warped Tour, like Meg & Dia. I would
love to tour with Meg & Dia. Or you know there's, uhm. *Pause*
S&S: Can't think of it on the spot?
Doc: *Laughs* It's the end of the day, my minds sort of like, whoa.
My head is like, blank. But you know this Fall we will be touring, we think
it'd be cool to get on a tour to get our big sort of Rock and Roll attitude
sound out. And we're hoping to get with a band like that.
S&S: Your new EP is very Jet-esque sounding. Was that something
you guys were intentionally aiming for, or did it just come out sounding
that way?
Doc: I think that we used a lot of things like Jet in the range of
riffs. Riff-based songs, it's all about like, a guitar riff. Beyond Jet,
that's like a classic sort of Rock and Roll kind of mentality. I mean, yeah,
I love the band Jet, it's awesome. We were feeling that. We were also feeling
like this INXS kind of vibe, a little bit of Prince. A little bit with new-wavey
synth kind of stuff too so it's like yeah, it just kind of happened. That's
what happened. *Laughs*
S&S: Do you have any final words to fans?
Doc: Just thank you. And look out for our tour this Fall. Also check
out our new EP, "Not Enough Red," on iTunes, and check us out on Myspace
and Twitter, anddddddd, you know. Keep it real!
