Limbeck
Sit back and relax with the mellow tunes of Limbeck.
S&S: Where are you right now?
Patrick: I'm about to leave. We're leaving on tour today. We're supposed to be getting to Kansas tomorrow, but it's going to be a really bad, long drive. It's ok. So, there's this big Fourth of July celebration we have planned in the studio we record at. So, I'm just about packed [and] ready to go at my house right now.
S&S: Your latest album, "Hi, Everything's Great", has a relaxing, country feel to it. What inspired you to head in this direction?
Patrick: Well, it took us a long time to put out this record. Our last cd came out three years ago. So, we've had a lot of time to kind of just really hang out and listen to music together. We all had this big shift in what we were influenced by and stuff we listened to; bands like the Old Ninety-Sevens, Whiskey Town, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and stuff like that. We always listen to that when we're on the road, so I guess it kind of rubbed off onto us musically and then kind of came out a little bit on our album. I think it's not too overbearing; it's just a hint of the country-ness to it. We enjoy it.
S&S: What is the best and worst part about recording?
Patrick: The worst part is that it's just like a stress time, because you have this certain amount of days where you want to get everything and all of your ideas in. You always think of stuff that you want to do right after you finish, so you just kind of go in there knowing that. Other than that, it's the best time ever, because we've made all of our records out in Kansas with Ed Rose. He's just the coolest guy ever. We just have a really, really good time. There's an apartment just above the studio, so we just sleep above the studio every night, and then come downstairs in the morning and record all day. It's just the best time. Ed's a really cool guy, so we have really good times with him. We just kind of become friends with everyone around the town too, so it's always just a really, really good month of hanging out. We love recording. I'd say that the positives outweigh the negatives by far. It's a good thing.
S&S: Would you say that you prefer recording or touring and playing live?
Patrick: That's rough. I don't know. The good thing about recording is you don't have to drive from place to place, which can kind of suck sometimes. We always tend to book our tours kind of weird so we have to make gigantic drives. I don't know. I'd say it's about even though. We love to be recording because that's what you do, you make records. I guess the shows would win out if I had to make a big call. Playing shows is good because it's fun to see new places and meet people and just travel around. It's good times.
S&S: Who has been your favorite band to tour with?
Patrick: Well, we just got off the bus with The All-American Rejects. They were incredible. We just really hit it off with them, so it was really fun. We found out we were fans of a lot of the same music, so we just hung out nonstop. It was a really good time. So, they've been our latest, greatest band to tour with. [On] Sunday, we meet up with Motion City Soundtrack, who we're really good friends with. So, I'd probably say those two bands right now. They're really good friends of ours, so we have really good times with them, being on the road and hanging out.
S&S: While touring, if you find yourselves with free time, how do you spend it?
Patrick: Oh, wow. We like to go see funny stuff where ever we can. We're usually running late; that's just our way. We've seen Billy The Kid's grave, which was pretty cool. We've been to the Dr. Pepper factory in Waco, Texas. That was really cool. We just like to go to the random kind of cheesy roadside monuments stuff. In Kansas, there's this 300 pound prairie dog that they advertise. It's this big thing made out of concrete, but it's really cool. You know, the things that you see, the trucker mesh hats that people have, the really terrible roadside stuff. We like to see that kind of stuff. We're suckers for truck stops. The problem is, we usually don't make it into the bigger cities. We usually just spend our time in between places on the truck stops. We like it, it's not like it's bad. That's what we like to do.
S&S: If you could pick a song to sum up your life so far, what would it be?
Patrick: Oh wow. Elyse, that's a hard question. Wow. That's putting me on the spot. That's a really good question though. I'd have to think it over, because that's a pretty big summary of my life.
S&S: If you were given a million dollars, what would you do with it?
Patrick: Wow. I would take all of our friends and go to South Padre Island off the side of Texas. Number one, I really like the state of Texas a lot. Number two, South Padre Island is like a spring break-y place, but we play near there a lot and it's really cool in the off-season because there's not many people there. The beach [has] really warm water and it's really fun. We always talk about it when we get home. So, I'd say I'd probably take all of our friends there and just hang out for a week.
S&S: Do you guys like to party a lot, or are you more laid back?
Patrick: We're pretty laid back. We just kind of hang out. We like to swim. We're pretty low-budg[et] on the road. So, if we have a show and then we have an eight hour drive to the next show , we'll probably drive overnight, but on the way, we'll find a hotel that has a pool not too close to the lobby. We'll just hop the fence to the pool and take kind of showers in their pool. We just go swimming overnight. It's pretty fun. We've only done it a few times, like we're a lot of talk. We love to do it, but we've only had the opportunity to do it like four or five times. It's the best ever. It's a total rush. We like to swim [and] we like to hang out. We're not crazy.
S&S: Do you still use the first instrument you ever owned?
Patrick: I don't. I sold it to buy my new instruments. It was a really, really sad day, but I had to upgrade my equipment. I had like zero dollars, so I had to sell my guitar. Plus, it didn't really work that good any more. It couldn't even play through an amp because it made too much noise. It was a sad day though, I have to say that, but I have my second guitar. I love that one. That one's my favorite ever. So, that's the one I play all the time.
S&S: Can you think of the weirdest dream you've ever had?
Patrick: I robbed a house with Michelle Branch. We were in this really expensive, high class neighborhood. We were just walking around and she was like, "Hey, why don't we just rob this house?" and I was like, "Awesome". I wasn't a gigantic Michelle Branch fan, but I had this crazy dream that we robbed the house together. We were in there, and all of a sudden, people started coming home. So, we freaked out, and then her friend came by and picked us up and we got away. It was really cool. I had this really huge, new found appreciation for Michelle Branch when I woke up.
S&S: Monster trucks or race cars?
Patrick: We've been talking about how cool it would be to go in the deep south and go to the big monster truck rally; like the kind you saw when you were a kid, with the destroyer cars and the big dragon thing. I'd say monster trucks, because we really want to go to one. It's really weird because music is a big scene and we're kind of used to it. It's really crazy when you go to a completely different scene, because that's a scene, monster trucks. I'm sure that all of the people that go watch monster truck rallies are the same people that were there last month. Most of them; there's some new people, I'm sure. I love going to places that are totally new like that. So, I'd say monster trucks. Probably race cars would be the same thing, but I think that I have more of a fascination with monster trucks. It's probably just a totally crazy scene; it would be fun.
S&S: What's your favorite movie?
Patrick: That's a huge tie for me; it's really hard. Everybody in the band will tell you that my favorite movie is Can't Hardly Wait, because I'm a really big sucker for those kind of cheesy teen movies. So, that's one of my favorite movies ever. I definitely have to say I'm a big horror movie fan, so Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my favorite horror movie. There's a movie called Wet Hot American Summer; we thanked it on our record, because it was so influential on it. It's the best movie ever. I highly, highly suggest renting it, if not purchasing it. So, that's my three way tie. Oh, if you count it, that Wilco DVD that just came out is really awesome to watch, especially all the deleted scenes. So, it's a four way tie.
S&S: Well, that's pretty much all I have. Thank you so much.
Patrick: Right on, Elyse. No problem. Thanks for calling. Have fun. Bye.
